They Gave Me Vinegar to Drink

They took my house and my job away,
I cannot breathe, my wife will not stay.
My children have left me, my world will shrink,
I thought I did good, but they gave me vinegar to drink.
I went to church and read the bible,
I worked two jobs and had a title.
I struggled and raised my family,
I’m not Jesus, I cannot walk the sea.
The whiskey is bitter, I’ll have another shot.
I try to be free, but I’m bound up like a knot.
My enemies surround me, I cannot think.
I thought I did good, but they gave me vinegar to drink.
I have borne the wounds and fell into a hole,
It’s getting dark and waters surround my soul.
Who will save me, in the hours before dawn,
Help me, O Lord, I am a pawn.
Darken my eyes, so I cannot see,
Lift me from this feast of iniquity.
The mountains hover over me, I must not think,
I thought I did good, but they gave me vinegar to drink.
The dogs nip my heels, as I shelter from the wind,
They do not stop as they lap up my sin.
Still, I will praise him as my soul does sink,
I thought I did good, but they gave me vinegar to drink.
